Three things you need to set up wireless internet on a laptop
By admin on August 9, 2011
Accessing the internet via a desktop computer and direct hookup has its advantages, but many consumers prefer the portability and convenience of a laptop. Rather than remain tethered to their home's ethernet cable, users can set up a home wireless access network, which will allow them to long onto the internet from their laptop anywhere in their home.
Internet access via a cable or DSL modem
Naturally, users will first need to access the Web by purchasing a connection from an internet service provider. If they are already receiving internet access through a monthly paid subscription, users will likely have a cable or DSL (digital subscriber line) modem.
A wireless router
This device is critical for establishing a home wireless network. Previously, users may have received internet access by connecting their modem directly to their computer with an ethernet cable. When setting up a network, users will instead use that cable to connect their modem with the router. This device then grants internet access to devices with wireless capabilities. Routers can be purchased at most major electronic stores.
A wireless adapter or card
Users will next need to ensure that the laptop they buy is able to receive a wireless internet connection. Most newer laptops come equipped with these capabilities through Bluetooth or AirPort, but if they are using an older laptop or wish to connect an aging PC to their wireless network, users may need to purchase wireless access cards or USB adapters for each device.
Don't forget security
Once they've got their wireless network online, users will need to practice strong security habits to avoid major laptop repair. Users should assign their network a name, or Service Set Identifier (SSID), and unique password, which can prevent unauthorized users from accessing their wireless connection. Other features enable encryption and authentication measures designed to enhance network security and reduce the likelihood users will need to call a Washington, D.C. laptop repair professional.
