As a result, many consumers opt to get rid of their computers when simply replacing certain components could give them a like-new machine at a low cost.

A recent article in the Buffalo News highlighted this predicament and spoke to a number of experts regarding the benefits of computer repair. For example, the report noted that oftentimes computers that are slowed by malware or rendered inoperative due to a hard drive failure can easily be fixed by local computer repair technicians.

"Not that I’m cheap or anything, but it's so much better to have it repaired than buy new," Tim Shaw, an area resident who services his computers in Cheektowaga, told the news source. "It's so much more economical."

However, according to reports, Facebook recently reached an agreement with the world's leading anti-virus and anti-spyware companies including McAfee, Symantec, Trend Micro, Microsoft and Sophos. As a result, the company is now able to use the URL blacklists that these companies compile to protect users from threats from these sources.

"Our URL blacklist system, which scans trillions of clicks per day, will now incorporate the malicious URL databases from these security companies to augment our existing level of protection," the company indicated in a blog post. "This means that whenever you click a link on our site, you benefit not just from Facebook’s existing protections, but the ongoing vigilance of the world’s leading corporations involved in computer security."

Facebook also announced it was unveiling an AntiVirus marketplace that allows its users to download free six-month licenses, and some full versions, of anti-virus software from its partner providers. However, as with any trial virus protection software, users may be asked to purchase the software after using the trial version.

Still, despite the new announcement, many Facebook users may be at risk from contracting a form of malware or virus indirectly through the social networking site. As a result, those who suspect their computer may be harmed due a reduction in functionality or speed may want to contact a virus removal company that services their local area.

Downloading the App
The free app for Facebook is available from the App World on your device, or you can download it online and then sync it over to your device. Either way, as soon as you log in with your regular Facebook username and password, all of your account information appears on the BlackBerry screen. In fact, a Trojan virus known as the "Flashback" virus has affected nearly 600,000 Mac computers over the past year, according to PC Magazine. Apple responded formally to the virus issue on April 10, 2012, and announced that the company has already begun working on antivirus software for Flashback specifically.

"A recent version of malicious software called Flashback exploits a security flaw in Java in order to install itself on Macs," reads the statement from Apple on its help forum. "Apple released a Java update on April 3, 2012 that fixes the Java security flaw for systems running OS X v10.7 and Mac OS X v10.6. By default, your Mac automatically checks for software updates every week, but you can change that setting in Software Update preferences. You can also run Software Update at any time to manually check for the latest updates."

According to PC Magazine, the majority of virus attacks took place in the U.S., and were spread simply from users browsing on websites that were not secure. To ensure that you are preventing yourself from viruses and other malware as much as possible, don't spend time on websites with heavy amount of pop-up ads or strange links, and make sure that you have updated your Web browser to its latest version. And of course, never download an unfamiliar file.

But sometimes, "the cloud" doesn't work as it should. One of the biggest complaints is that consumers experience iCloud account issues. Consumer Reports released the findings of a study on March 20 that revealed the new iPad can heat up to as much as 116 degrees fahrenheit if users are playing games or downloading apps.

An iPad running the high-processor game Infinity Blade II for 45 minutes reached 116 degrees when plugged in, and topped out at 113 degrees when unplugged, according to Consumer Reports. The heat was not evenly distributed throughout the iPad, and instead focused on one corner of the device.

Oddly, plugging the device in did not even charge the battery while the game was running. Instead, the battery drained as if the iPad was not plugged in at all.

At the same time, Consumer Reports notes it does not view the iPad's heating issue as a safety risk. Devices that hold at a temperature of 120 degrees may damage bare skin over a period of time, but the iPad itself only gives off a warm heat. Additionally, tablets and laptops are not handled the same, so there's less of a risk that an overheating tablet would harm a user's lap.

The reason for the reload is that this process is Apple's attempt to stop Safari from freezing, but it doesn't work as smoothly as many users would have hoped.

"Safari 5.0 brought some helpful security and convenience features, but its rebuilt machinery – intended, Apple says, to ensure that 'an unresponsive website won't affect Safari' – seizes up too often," writes local Washington D.C. tech expert and journalist Rob Pegoraro in a recent article for USA Today.

"One obstacle to any backup scheme is organization. Regardless of the hardware or software involved, you need to be able to point to the files you wanted backed up… If you save files that you care about all over the place, your only backup option is to copy the entire computer, which is always a pain in the neck," writes CNET's Michael Horowitz.

For example, this week, two fake websites were kicked off the internet and each fined $156,000 by British internet service, Phonepayplus, for posing as Wikipedia and Twitter and coercing users into clicking on fake ads that ending up costing them money. Their domain names: "Wikapedia.com" and "Twtter.com."

"In both cases, the landing pages for the 'squatted' sites looked like the genuine sites the consumer was searching for – the 'squatted' sites used the same logos, coloring and fonts," reads Phonepayplus's company statement regarding the incident on its website. "These 'squatted' sites informed consumers that they had won or could claim a prize, such as an iPad. In both cases, consumers were given the impression that to enter or claim they simply had to enter their contact details and answer some questions."

Instead, users had to enter their cell phone numbers and were asked to complete a survey, but every time they opened a text message or responded to a question, their phones were charged.

Since the websites failed to inform the consumers of the charges, the companies have also been ordered to reimburse each customer.

For this reason, it is important to double check the URL and domain name of a website, particularly before clicking on any advertisement, survey or other link that pops up.
